The US Open began in 1881, when the sport was played on the luxurious lawn courts of the Newport Casino in Rhode Island. In these times, the format of the event was slightly different. The previous year’s champion had an automatic entrance to the final match, while the challengers would compete for the chance to dethrone the previous champion in the final.
